Poland fined Gazprom over Nord Stream 2
The Polish antimonopoly authority UOKiK fined Gazprom $ 57 million for ignoring an order to provide information on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The imposition of the fine is related to the creation of a consortium to finance the construction of a gas pipeline without the consent of the Polish Office for Competition and Consumer Protection.

Poland fined Gazprom over Nord Stream 2

Three years ago Gazprom and partners set up a consortium to build a gas pipeline across the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany and further to Europe.

Help econominews.ru: In April 2017, Nord Stream 2 AG, the project operator, signed agreements with the French company Engie, Austrian OMV, British-Dutch Royal Dutch Shell, German Uniper and Wintershall to finance the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline project: five European companies provide long-term financing in the amount of 50% of the total project cost.

Poland considered that this affects its interests, and began an investigation into the legality of the creation of the consortium: at the beginning of the year it demanded that Gazprom provide contracts concluded with other companies financing the construction of Nord Stream 2, follows from the statement of the Polish administration.

Since Poland did not receive the required information, the country's antitrust authority filed charges against six companies: Gazprom, Engie Energy, Uniper, OMV, Shell and Wintershall.

"Violation of the laws of Poland, a member state of the European Union, will lead to financial sanctions provided for in it," said Tomasz Chrostny, President of the Office for Competition and Consumer Protection.

Earlier, UOKiK imposed a fine on Engie of 40.3 million euros in the same case. Poland, like Ukraine, is opposed to the project together with the United States. In September 2018, the laying of a gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea began, and in December the project was suspended due to US sanctions. Now the resumption of pipe-laying is being prepared: it remains to lay about 120 kilometers in the Danish water area of the Baltic Sea. This may take several months. The United States is threatening with new sanctions - for all companies involved in the project.

The Russian side is already taking into account the possibility of sanctions: Akademik Chersky, the only pipelayer that can complete the construction of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, ceased to belong to Gazprom. This event can confirm the likelihood of the execution of US threats.
